The Stories
Powerful elder women in European myth & folklore
tradition-bearers, wisdom-keepers, tellers of tales
Tales of the wise women
Please find below the audio versions of a few of my retellings and reimaginings of stories about older women.
As well as the stories I write about in Hagitude, I’m currently working on a collection of additional stories and folklore from Europe which feature elder women. This will be published by Virago Press in October 2024 as Wise Women: Myths and Folklore in Celebration of Older Women.
The Old Woman. The one who haunted the edgelands; the mysterious shadow in the heart of the darkwood. The exile, the rebel, the one who shrugged off the fetters of conventional society; the one who imagined and cultivated her own vision of how the world should be, thank you very much.
